Green Thumbs anyone?

Do you have an interest in growing your own produce, but don`t have a suitable space in downtown Smiths Falls?

The Rideau Environmental Action League (REAL) would like to determine if there is sufficient interest by area residents in a community garden. Community gardens can be divided into individual plots or farmed communally. Usually they are used to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs, and so are a healthy and inexpensive source of local food. The gardens also benefit the environment, are an enjoyable activity, provide light exercise, and create a social community of the people that garden there.

A community garden plot might be of interest to apartment dwellers, or anyone whose own yard is unsuitable. Raised garden plots are an opportunity for the those whose mobility is impaired to participate as well.

Previous local efforts to do a community garden have had difficulty finding a suitable site. REAL would like to make space available on the REAL Deal site, 85 William St. W., if a number of people come forward, particularly people willing to play a key role in getting the project rolling.

Please call REAL, 283-9500, or drop into the store, or e-mail info@REALaction.ca with your comments. A community garden could be underway as early as this year.
