Pave shoulders for cyclists, Ontario urged
Ottawa Citizen / Lee Greenberg / 09 September 2010
The uneasy co-existence between rural cyclists and automobiles can be fixed, according to an Ontario politician, who is asking the province to pave the shoulders of its country highways.
Norm Miller, Conservative MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka, says another metre of pavement would give the growing number of cyclists in Ontario some breathing room on the roads.
It would help drivers too -- by lowering the number of accidents caused when cars drift onto gravel shoulders.
An Australian study concluded that paved shoulders reduced accidents by 41 per cent, according to Miller.
There are additional benefits, including lower maintenance costs on roads and increased tourism in rural Ontario.
