Wolfe Island: Final environmental approval granted
Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc / John Keating / 04 June 2008
Earlier today, we received a letter from the Ontario Minister of Tourism (the “Minister”), on behalf of the Ontario Minister of the Environment. The Minister has confirmed the Decision by the Director of the Environmental Assessment and Approvals Branch of the Ministry of Environment (the “Director”) that an Individual Environmental Assessment and mediation are not required for the Wolfe Island Wind Project.
The Director has expressed, and the Minister has confirmed, satisfaction that the issues raised by stakeholders were properly addressed in the comprehensive work carried out by Canadian Hydro to date or in future work we have committed to complete. Based on this final determination by the Minister, the required Statement of Completion will be submitted, clearing the way for us to proceed with construction, subject to any other permits and approvals required.
We have been working diligently over the past 40 months to develop a responsible, sustainable project on Wolfe Island. This renewable energy initiative has received a great deal of scrutiny by many stakeholders, interest groups, First Nations, and agencies. We are pleased that the approvals process is working effectively for the Wolfe Island Wind Project and to have obtained this most significant regulatory approval.
This approval is a culmination of the comprehensive work undertaken by Canadian Hydro with input received from various stakeholders every step of the way. We have demonstrated respect for the needs of the environment and believe that issues expressed by stakeholders were handled in a fair, open and transparent manner.
We want to thank everyone who participated in the Environmental Screening Process. Canadian Hydro will fulfill its environmental commitments as outlined in project documents and looks forward to continuing its involvement in the local community. We believe that the Wolfe Island Wind Project will deliver many benefits to the community and province and look forward to the start of construction.
