Ontario invests in electric car charging stations
Energy Efficiency News / 10 August 2011
Amidst a spate of recent developments in the electric car sector, the Premier of Ontario has announced a CAD$80 million fund to kick-start development and investment in charging stations for electric cars.
Together with Infrastructure Ontario, the state hopes to encourage proposals for recharging facilities from public and private sectors. Making charging stations widely available is an essential step towards the province’s aim of making one in 20 cars in Ontario electrically powered by 2020.
Existing incentives for electric vehicle buyers in Ontario include a government rebate of up to $8,500, as well as "green license plates" which allow the cars to be driven in express lanes.
Ontario's Electric Vehicles Plan Revs Up
Government of Ontario / Press Release / 03 March 2011
Ontario's vision to have one out of 20 vehicles to be electrically powered by 2020 is moving forward.
Eight charging stations are now up and running in Ontario in partnership with world leader Better Place. The company also opened an electric car demonstration and education centre in Toronto to help get more electric cars running on our roads and highways. For every 10,000 electric vehicles on the road, it is estimated there will be 40,000 tonnes less of CO2 polluting the air annually, which is like taking 8,500 gasoline-fuelled cars off the road.
The province is also offering incentives to encourage Ontarians to purchase plug-in cars. Rebates starting from $5,000 up to $8,500 are available to those who purchased plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles after July 1, 2010. And green licence plates are now available to drivers of such electric vehicles to use carpool lanes, even if there is only one person in the vehicle.

If all goes according to plan, 5 per cent of all cars in Ontario will be electric by 2020 — and this week, the province is one car closer to its goal.
Well, sort of. At its Scarborough headquarters Tuesday, Toyota Canada handed over the keys to one of its new Prius Plug-In Hybrids, which it will be lending to Ontario for a year.

Individuals, businesses and organisations with an environmental conscience in the Canadian Province of Ontario have been boosted by the news that they may be eligible for a rebate on the purchase of electric cars.
From July 1, buyers may qualify for a rebate between C$5,000 and C$8,500 although the cash boost will only be made available to the first 10,000 applicants who qualify by purchasing or leasing a new plug-in hybrid electric or battery electric vehicle.
Quebec: Charging ahead with electric vehicles
Toronto Star / Tyler Hamilton / 18 January 2010
Hydro-Québec plans to launch the largest electric-vehicle trial in the country later this fall, a $4.5 million project over three years that will put 50 electric cars on the streets of Boucherville. The utility has partnered with Mitsubishi Motors, which will supply its i-MiEV electric cars for the trial.
"This is a major step for us," said Stacey Masson, a spokeswoman for Hydro-Québec. "We want to make sure we can support this kind of transition (to electric vehicles) with the necessary infrastructure."
Ontario: Government Making It Easier To Buy Electric Vehicles
Government of Ontario / Press Release / 15 July 2009
Ontario's target is to become a world leader in building and driving electric cars.
The McGuinty government aims to have one out of every 20 vehicles driven in Ontario to be electrically powered by 2020. This would put Ontarians into cleaner, more efficient vehicles, and expand the electric vehicle market for manufacturers.
